STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Ida Jane Newton Stewart, age 84, died Monday at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. The Bulloch County native moved to Effingham County as a small child. She graduated from Marlow High School in 1944 and Draughns Business College in Savannah. Following her education, Jane returned to Statesboro, where she resided for the past 67 years. Jane retired from Brooks Instrument as an office clerk, following 32 years of service. She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Portal.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Stewart; a son, Jimmie Stewart; her parents, Estelle Nease Newton and Steve Newton; and a brother, A.J. Newton.
Surviving are one son, Daniel Wayne "Danny" Stewart of Statesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Buddy Burke of Bloomingdale; a sister, Shirley Brannen of Statesboro; and a daughter-in-law, Florine Stewart. Additional survivors include her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roy Jarriell. Interment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kyle Oglesby officiating.
Pallbearers will be Billy Phillips, Vick Burke, Joey Gay, Calvin Stewart, Jerry Stewart and Dayton Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Oak Grove Baptist Church, care givers and staff of Eagle Health and Rehab, Ted Williams and Danny Duncan.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2285 Oak Grove Church Road, Portal, Ga. 30450.
