Mrs. John Wesley Darden

WAYCROSS, Ga. - Elizabeth Conoly Darden died on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. She was born in Waycross December 27, 1912, to the late William G. and Annie McIver Conoly and lived there all her life. She was a graduate of Waycross High School and Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She taught elementary school in Manor and at Crawford Street School. In 1937 she married John Wesley Darden, local businessman. He predeceased her in 1994 after 57 years of marriage. Mrs. Darden also was predeceased by five siblings, Ruth Conoly Phillips, Flora Conoly Ferrell, William George Conoly, Esther Conoly Lawson and James Currie Conoly.
Mrs. Darden was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, holding many positions in the Women of the Church and being the longest standing member at the time of her death. She was a past member of The Waycross Service League and various other volunteer organizations. Her favorite pastimes included crossword puzzles, bridge and socializing with friends. She excelled in her favorite role of mother and homemaker. The Waycross Journal-Herald named her Mother of the Year in 1990.
She is survived by four children, Elizabeth Darden Hatcher (Betty and Bill) of Statesboro, Jane Darden Lanier (Jane and Hicks) of Atlanta, Ruth Darden Foss ("Bootsie" and Dick) of Key Biscayne, Fla., and John W. Darden Jr. (Johnny and Gay) of Waycross. Eight grandchildren include William S. Hatcher III (Amy) of Augusta, John Darden Hatcher (Miriam) of Statesboro, Elizabeth Hatcher Glass (David) of Atlanta, John Hicks Lanier Jr. of San Francisco, Calif., Elizabeth Lanier Jancik (Brad) of San Francisco, Calif., Stephen Lanier (Landon) of Washington, D.C., Kathryn S. Darden of Charleston, S.C., and A. Conoly Darden of Atlanta. She also was blessed with six great-grandchildren. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Mrs. James C. Conoly (Olene) of Savannah, Mrs. Denham C. Darden (Jeannette) of Waycross, Mrs. William B. Darden (Mary) of Orlando, Fla., and Mrs. B.B. Renfro (Dot) of Charlotte, N.C. Also surviving are nephews and niece, Dr. Thomas J. Ferrell (Tom and Joy), Flora Ferrell McClarin (Flora and Bill), all of Waycross, and Captain William M. Ferrell (Will and Sharon) of Camarillo, Calif.; and many other loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Miles-Odum Funeral Home.
