Mr. Wendell Glenn Tyson

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. Wendell Glenn Tyson, age 63, died Saturday evening, April 5, 2014, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. Wendell was born in Swainsboro, Georgia, and grew up in the Dublin, Georgia, area. He was a 1969 graduate of East Laurens High School, where he was a member of the basketball team and was named MVP his senior year. After high school, he attended Brewton Parker College and then joined the U.S. Army, where he served for several years. Upon his completion of military service, Wendell moved to Statesboro, where he attended Georgia Southern College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in sociology. After college, he began his career in social work at various programs for children with special needs, including Cedarwood, Pineland Mental Health and "Babies Can't Wait." He retired in 2007 after 30 years of service with the state of Georgia.
Wendell was a very active member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Virgil Agan Bible Study Class. Wendell had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the guitar. He loved his children and spent many years coaching their sports teams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Edward Tyson and Lois Scott Tyson; and a brother, Kelvin Tyson.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jakyn Tyson of Bristol, Ga.; a daughter, Ashlie Tyson of Statesboro; his stepmother, Doris Tyson of Dublin; a sister-in-law, Marsha Tyson of Dublin; three nephews, Pace Tyson of Dublin, Scott Tyson of Portland, Ore., and Kyle Tyson of Kuwait.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Randy Waters officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
The graveside service and burial will be on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery in Adrian, Ga.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Spivey, Gary Crosby, Warren Groover, Chris Chambers and Joey Godbee.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459; or the Coastal Georgia Regional Office of the , 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA, 31406.
