Barbara Bennett Leapard died April 26, 2013, in Sylvania, Ohio. She was born on July 17, 1952, to Lovett and Sara Neville Bennett and grew up in Sylvania (Georgia) and Statesboro.
Dr. Leapard was a 1970 honor graduate of Statesboro High School and a cum laude graduate of Georgia Southern College, with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and German. She earned her master's degree at the University of South Carolina and her doctorate at the University of Toledo. She was a professor of mathematics at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Long recognized as an outstanding mathematics instructor and innovator, Dr. Leapard was twice honored as STAR Teacher and was named outstanding secondary teacher by the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club. At Eastern Michigan, she was honored two years in a row by receiving a "Teaching Excellence Award" from the Office of the Provost and First Year Center of EMU.
In 2003, she received the highest recognition of the university when she was awarded the "Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Award of Eastern Michigan University." She was selected for this award because of her dedication to helping students become more mathematically competent. Her "Math in the City" project, a field-based course in which future teachers focus on learning mathematics, in depth, was cited as an example of her curricular innovation and student mentoring.
Dr. Leapard was predeceased by her father, Lovett Bennett; and her grandparents, Robert David and Leona Crews Bennett of Sylvania and William Gesmon and Marguerite Nunnally Neville of Statesboro.
She is survived by her husband, David Wilton Leapard; her daughters, Sara Elizabeth Leapard Saunders and her husband, Dustin Charles Saunders, of Hamilton, Ohio, and Emily Allison Leapard of Indianapolis, Indiana; and her grandsons, Charles David Saunders and Thomas Lovett Saunders of Hamilton. Survivors also include her mother, Sara Neville Bennett; sister, Carolyn Bennett Broucek, and her husband, William Samuel Broucek; and brother, Lovett Bennett Jr., and his wife, Missy Mallard Bennett, all of Statesboro. Nephews Samuel Josiah Broucek and his wife, Michelle Shaw Broucek, William Bennett Broucek, William Lovett Bennett and Michael Hampton Bennett, all of Statesboro, survive her as well. Additionally, Dr. Leapard is survived by her mother-in-law, Edna Leapard of Columbia, South Carolina; and her brother-in-law, Mike Leapard, and his wife, Janet Leapard, of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Many aunts, uncles and cousins are among the survivors.
Visitation will be held at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 1, from 5-7 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church on Thursday, May 2, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
Nephews and cousins will serve as pallbearers.
A memorial scholarship is being established at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan, in Barbara Bennett Leapard's name.
