STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. George Everette Bowen, Sr., age 80, died Thursday, June 5, 2014, at his residence following a brief illness. The Bulloch County native was a graduate of Marvin Pittman Laboratory School in Statesboro. Following high school, George joined the United States Air Force where he served for over 20 years, until his retirement in 1970 and from the Air Force Reserve in 1973. Traveling the world during his military service, George served in many areas including, DaNang AB, Republic of Vietnam; Korea during the Korean Conflict, Keflavic, Iceland for one year and Okanawa, Japan for over two years. He was also stationed in various areas of the United States during his service. Upon his retirement, George began a 20-year career with Civil Service where he primarily worked at Hunter Army Air Field until his retirement in the mid '90s. George's continued desire to work soon had him employed as a bus driver with the Bulloch County Board of Education, where he served for 10 years until his retirement.
Mr. Bowen was an active member of the New Life Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church in Statesboro where he was a long-time trustee, Sunday School Superintendant and a member of the Master's Men.
For many years, George enjoyed bowling and C.B. radios and most of all he has always been an avid Red Sox fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas Homer and Corene Kerby Bowen; his first wife of 51 years, Marie Cook Bowen and his second wife, of four years, Ann Hargraves Bowen and a brother, Herman Bowen.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Everette and Lisa Bowen of Buckhead, Richard and Lynn Bowen of Stafford, VA and Steven and Trina Bowen of Pooler; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Robert Maiden of Statesboro; nine grandchildren, Michael Bowen, Melissa Webster, Anthony Bowen, Rachel Gasses, Steven Bowen, Jr., Cody Deal, Taylor Deal, Micah Bowen and Nathan Bowen; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Berry of Joliet, IL and Carolyn Price of Metter and a brother, Larry Bowen of St. Augustine, FL.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at New Life Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Miracle officiating, assisted by Rev. Buddy Morris. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service.
Interment with full military honors will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Cody Deal, Jonathan Price, Robert Maiden, Michael Bowen, Andrew Gassen and Robert Webster.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Master's Men.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to New Life Fellowship Building Fund, 23574 Hwy 80 East, Statesboro, Ga. 30458 or Welch College, 3606 West End Ave., Nashville, TN, 37205.
