PEMBROKE, Ga. -- Mr. Jacob Wendell Smith, age 65, died on July 7, 2014, at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Hospital in Augusta, Ga. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a 1967 graduate of Marvin Pittman High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam War. He attended Swainsboro Technical School. Mr. Wendell owned and operated Smiths Upholstery for over 20 years and served on the Georgia Southern University Police Department for over 30 years. He loved to fish, crab, playing his guitar and singing. He was a member of the Lawrence Baptist Church, American Legion Post 90 and a Mason with Ogeechee Lodge 213.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Waldo J. and Frances Smith; a brother-in-law, Randy Jenkins; a sister-in-law, Debbie Bell Jenkins; and his father-in-law, Norman Jenkins.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Vicki Jenkins Smith; a daughter, Pamela Jean Harville; a son, Jacob Ryan Smith, all of Pembroke; three sisters and brother-in-law, Joy Smith of Metter, Charlene Smith Hagans of Stilson and Debbie Smith and Al Creasy of Brooklet; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Brenda Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; a mother-in-law, Sadie Jenkins; two brothers-in-law, Jimmy Jenkins and Benny Jenkins, all of Pembroke; two grandchildren, Mackenzie Harville and Jacob Dalton Smith. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lawrence Baptist Church, 3420 Lawrence Church Road, Pembroke, GA 31321, with the Rev. Albert Hodges and Elder Jake Futch officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Gary Jenkins, Benny Jenkins, David Kinard, Allen Jenkins, Garland Bennett, Ryan Brannen, Jimmy Jenkins and Brian Scott.
Honorary pallbearers will be his classmates from the 1967 graduating class of Marvin Pittman High School and the employees of the Georgia Southern University Police Department.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Lawrence Baptist Church, c/o Beth Brown, 18885 Highway 46, Brooklet, GA 30415.
