STATESBORO, Ga. -- Deacon James Robert "Jimmy" Barnes, age 77, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He was a native of Bulloch County, Georgia, and reared in Savannah, Ga. He was a 1955 graduate of Alfred E. Beach High School and a 1965 graduate of John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science, Nashville, Tennessee. He dedicated his life to funeral service. Being a mortician is all Jimmy ever aspired to be.
Mr. Barnes was the owner, licensed funeral director and mortician of James R. Barnes Mortuary, Statesboro, Ga., for the past 54 years. He was a deacon of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and a member of several funeral service organizations.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Shirley; his children, Jarvis Robinetta Barnes, her son, Jameson Bernard Scott, Statesboro, Ga.; Janice Reynelda Barnes-Blankumsee (Kendall), and their children, Zaquez Tyre Blankumsee, Kensley Lauren Blankumsee and Korbin Lamar Blankumsee, all of Quitman, Ga.; Sadie Latrell Odom, and her children, Shaniya Odom-Barnes, Sasha Semaj Davis, both of Statesboro, Ga., and Julius Motley Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Vernice Barnes, Savannah, Ga.; father-in-law, James (the Rev. Sarah) Prince, Statesboro, Ga.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral arrangements for Mr. James Robert "Jimmy" Barnes will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at First Baptist Church, 108 North Main Street, with Bishop Russell A. Wright Sr., eulogist, and Elder Alexander Smith Jr., presiding. The private burial will take place on Friday.
There will be a public viewing on Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Baptist Church, Register, Ga.
Family visitation will be on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at the Tabernacle Baptist Church.
