Edna Mae (Hodges) Deal

Statesboro, Ga. -- Mrs. Edna Mae Hodges Deal, age 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was the only child of the late Mary S. and Willie C. Hodges.
Mrs. Deal was a dedicated member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church where she was a member of the Cora Williams Circle and the Ladies Fellowship Bible Study. She enjoyed the fellowship of her family, friends, church members and neighbors and deeply appreciated the kindness of those who faithfully visited and shared of themselves with her over the past seven years. "Miss Edna" was a true Steel Magnolia, exhibiting remarkable faith, courage and strength as well as a loving, gentle nature. As a homemaker, she was known for her hospitable spirit and her exceptional southern cooking. She was a blessing to each person she touched, and she will be fondly remembered for her inquisitive mind, her gift of conversation, and her sense of humor. Although we grieve her absence from our lives, her family rejoices that she has joined her Father in heaven after a long, full life as His obedient servant.
Mrs. Deal was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Charlie R. Deal, and her only child, Charles A. Deal.
Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Judy Deal Chappell of Denmark Community; her grandchildren, Neysa and Harry Lee of Marietta, Amy and Dr. "William" Buddy Morgan of Statesboro, Kevin Deal of Nevils and Russ and Rebecca Deal of Richmond Hill. Her life was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Caroline, and Madison Lee; Taylor, Emily, and Abigail Morgan; Megan and Ethan Deal; and Kayla, Walt, Austin and Connor Deal. Additional survivors include her in-laws, Lonnie Deal of Savannah, Ruth and Jack Bragg of Statesboro, Mary and Remer Franklin of Metter, and Cecil and Barbara Deal of Savannah and her former sister-in-law, Estelle Deal of Savannah. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be Saturday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
A service celebrating her life will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Randy Waters officiating.
Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Donald Donaldson, Wendell Brannen, Rodney Harville, Hugh Deal, Rex Miller, and Francis Crosby.
