ABBEVILLE, Ga. -- Mr. Elson Smith, age 67, passed into eternal rest on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The native of Laurens County was a retired truck driver and served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received his education in the public school system of Laurens County, where he was a graduate of Millville High School. At an early age, he became a member of the Strawberry A.M.E. Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Jennie Jaudon Smith; and a twin brother, Nelson Smith Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories: three sisters, Gennie Smith Stevens, Dublin, Ga., Willie Mae Smith, Augusta, Ga., and Pamela Tucker, Dublin, Ga.; three brothers, Henry (Kate) Smith, Register, Ga., Horman (Towynne) Tucker, Eastman, Ga., and John Tucker, Dublin, Ga.; four aunts, a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Smith will lie in state on the day of the service from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour.
The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Greater Strawberry A.M.E. Church, 630 Country Club Road, Dublin, Ga., 31021 with Pastor Lula Riley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with full military honors.
