George Fredrick Bearden, 79, of Newington, died Monday, January 27, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro.
The Springfield, Ga., native was in the United States Air Force for seven years, attained the rank of staff sergeant and served in France, Italy, Germany, North Africa and Korea, where he coached a Little League Baseball team. After a long career in the shipping industry, he retired from NYK Line Corporation. Mr. Bearden was an avid sportsman who played football, baseball, basketball, golf and bowled and he loved Elvis Presley gospel music. His love of family, however, was at the top of his list, including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of North Newington Baptist Church and Briar Creek Country Club.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 31, at North Newington Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral hour.
The Rev. Slade Spier and the Rev. Max Hall will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Evans, Brad Evans, Jim Bearden, Freddie Vest, Lee Evans, Josh Quick, Clark O'Barr and Trent Evans.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Swicord, Doug Weathers, Charlie Williams, Don Brown, Duane Schnitzler, Ruddy Wooten, Tom Avret and members of the Brotherhood of North Newington Baptist Church.
Mr. Bearden is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dahlia Evans Bearden of Newington; two daughters, Michelle B. (Alan Sr.) Campbell of Charlotte, N.C., and Patrice B. (Wade Sr.) Turlington of Fletcher, N.C.; one sister, Arlene (Sammy) Salter of Ellabell; two brothers, Delmas Bearden of Burlington, N.C., and Dean (Mary) Bearden of Brandon, Miss.; his grandchildren, Laura (Derek) Helms of Charlotte, N.C., Alan (Kim) Campbell Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Alicia (Nathan) White of Huntersville, N.C., Hannah Campbell and Andrew Campbell of Charlotte, N.C., Brittany Turlington, Wade Turlington Jr. and Evan Turlington of Fletcher, N.C.; a step-granddaughter, Morgan Turlington of Hardeeville, S.C.; and one great-grandson, Brooks Campbell of Charlotte, N.C.
