ROSWELL, Ga. –- Helen Johnson Legette Bowen, age 85, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, following a long illness. Born on November 3, 1928, in Statesboro, Ga., she was the daughter of Harry E. and Juanita Cowart Johnson.
She graduated from Statesboro High School in 1945. She received her Bachelor of Science in education from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville in 1949. She received her master of librarianship from Emory University in 1958 and her specialist degree in advanced study in librarianship from Emory University in 1967. Her career began with teaching at McKeachern School in Powder Springs, Ga., followed by librarian positions at North Florida Junior College in Madison, Fla., and Moultrie Junior High School in Moultrie, G. In 1964, she returned to Statesboro to become librarian at Statesboro Junior High, then later William James Middle School. She retired in June 1987 after 37 years.
She was a longtime member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ruby Lee-Sadie Lee UMW circle. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Bulloch Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint and playing bridge.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Bowen is preceded in death by her brother, Harry E. Johnson Jr.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Shirley Legette of Middleburg, Fla.; her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Gary Floyd of Johns Creek, Ga.; three grandchildren, Kyle (Carrie) Legette and Justin Legette of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ashley Stapleton of Johns Creek, Ga.; one great-grandson, Gavin Legette of Jacksonville, Fla.
Visitation will be Friday, April 11, from 10-11 a.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
A graveside service and burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Statesboro First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2048, Statesboro, GA 30459.
