WOODBINE, Ga. -- Mary Ellen Parrish Hannaford, 84, died Friday, January 24, 2014, at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center. A native of Brooklet, Ga., she was a graduate of Georgia Teachers College, now Georgia Southern University, with a Bachelor of Science degree. She taught business education at Charlton County High School in Folkston from 1950 to 1954. Later, she worked for many years as a substitute teacher in the Camden County School System.

A lifelong devoted United Methodist, Ellen was a member of Kingsland United Methodist Church. Previously, she was an active member of Woodbine Methodist Church, where she served in numerous capacities including children's coordinator, Sunday School superintendent, worship chairman, a member of the administrative board, Women's Society for Christian Service, United Methodist Women and the church choir. She was a charter member of the Woodbine Woman's Club, active in the Woodbine Elementary PTA and an active member of the Camden American Legion Women's Auxiliary.
Since the original printing in 1982, she coordinated the compilation, editing, numerous revisions/reprints and sale of a cookbook originally titled, "Favorite Recipes From Our Best Cooks," over 4,500 copies of which have been sold across the country with profits supporting the local church. Ellen was known throughout the community as an excellent cook. Her coveted cakes and pies were delivered to many in celebration and bereavement and were sold to support many worthy causes.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Grady Parrish Sr. and Henrietta Robertson Parrish; brothers, Hunter Wayne Parrish and Henry Grady Parrish Jr.; and a sister, Doris Henry.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, George Leonard Hannaford; daughter, Dawn Hannaford; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Mike Odom of Richmond Hill; son and daughter-in-law, Dana and Kathy Hannaford of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Hunter Odom, Haydon Hannaford, Caroline Odom and Zachary Hannaford; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Franklin Lee of Brooklet; and numerous members of the Hannaford family of Folkston and the Parrish and Lee families of Brooklet.
The funeral service was held 11 a.m. Monday, January 27, at Kingsland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Felton Harden officiating. Interment followed in Homeward Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Harley Brock, Shane Gentry, Scott Henning, Glen Keene, Roger Lewis, Jimmy McCollum, Glenn McCullough and Dale O'Neal.
