MILLEN, Ga. -- Samuel Owen Simms, age 19, died Thursday morning at the Medical College of Georgia following a courageous two-year battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Sam was born in Augusta, but lived all of his life in Jenkins County. As a very small child, he became active in the 4-H and over the years he enjoyed the camps, especially being a leader at the Clover Leaf camps. 4-H has been a vital part of his life and the friendships that he has made. He truly loved every aspect of the organization, its members and leaders.
Sam loved hunting and fishing, watching football, eating and especially his loving way of making fun of others.
He was a lifelong member of Elam Baptist Church in Jenkins County, where he was a member of the youth group.
Sam was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert Simms.
Surviving are his parents, Cindy Dempsey Simms and Eric Simms of Millen; his sisters and brothers, Sara Simms and Aaron Simms of Statesboro, Hannah, Noah, Lily, Cole and Ty Simms, all of Millen; his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Sandra Dempsey of Millen and Ann Hanks of Memphis, Tenn.; paternal grandmother, Rose Marie Simms of Martinez; and his great-grandmother, Elizabeth Lanier of Millen.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Elam Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Farmer officiating.
The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dylan Bacon, Knapp Boddiford, Mark Williams, Jarrett Cartee, John Lee, Rabon Hutchinson, Justin Deal and Brandon Eskew.
