SYLVANIA, Ga. - Mr. Vernie Allen, age 69, died on Friday November 8, 2013 at his son's residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Bulloch County native had lived in Bulloch for most of his life before moving to Screven County 15 years ago. He was retired from Grinnell Corporation after 30 years of service as a maintenance mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Allen loved everything outdoors, loved to fish and work in his yard. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents Cletis and Jessie Allen and his sister Anna Marie Allen.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law Tony and Cindy Allen of Sylvania, and Shane and Jennifer Allen of Rocky Ford, GA; seven grandchildren Brittany Lynn Allen, Shelly Hardy, Katelyn Whittington, Rachel Waters, Lanny Waters, Amanda Newsome and Howell Lariscy; five great grandchildren Cale Hardy, Conner Whittington, Kiley Whittington, Noah Bowen and Elijah Newsome; a sister Sue Allen Mitchell of Reidsville, NC; a brother and sister-in-law Danny and Jan Allen of Bluffton, SC; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The visitation will be held on Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home Statesboro with Rev. Rudine Becton officiating.
Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531 Statesboro, GA 30459.
