Zilpha Constance "Sue" Eubank McDonald entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, surrounded by her family. She had recently moved to Statesboro, Georgia, from Virginia Beach to live with her daughter. She was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and she will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed. She was born on February 7, 1921, in Baltimore, Maryland, and just celebrated her 93rd birthday. She was the daughter of the late Asa Steele Eubank and Sina Elinor (York) Eubank of Norfolk. She graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked in a bank. She was always eager to reminisce about life on her own in Fredericksburg and in Washington, which she remembered as a very exciting time.
She returned to Norfolk and met the man she would be married to for 46 wonderful years, Joseph Francis McDonald of Boston, Massachusetts, who was in the Navy. She and her family lived throughout the Northeast including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Georgia and her much-loved Virginia. As a Virginia Beach resident, she was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church. She was an avid reader, savvy card player, gardener, loved walking and traveling and socializing with friends and family. She loved hearing a good joke and sharing it with others, and she had the good fortune to be able to remember one for years.
She was a member of numerous community organizations, including the Lake Smith Terrace Garden Club, Meals on Wheels and TOPS Club, Inc. She was especially proud of her work as an alumnus of the Maury Class of 1938, where she was instrumental in the organization and administration of many alumni events including reunions, yearly events and get-togethers.
She is survived by her son, Joseph F. McDonald Jr., Virginia; daughters, Eleanor E. Parker, New Hampshire, Patricia (Timothy) Faircloth, Georgia, Kathryn (Gregory) Servant, Canada, Marilyn (David) Siddle, Virginia; grandchildren, Kimberly M. Bilgere, Michael McDonald, Jennifer P. Ford, Jeffery Parker, Sheree W. Hepner, Robert White, Emily Servant; great-grandchildren, Allison and Kate Bilgere, Madeline McDonald, Holden, Allison and Jackson Parker, Spinnaker Ford, Danielle Mitchell; brother, Roland Eubank; sister, Gloria Lee (Lloyd) Evans; niece, Stephanie Burnett; nephew, Scott Evans; niece, Allison Evans; and close friend, Naomi Rhodes.
