DENMARK, Ga. -- Mrs. Shelby Jean Hughes Martin, age 73, died peacefully, Monday, April 7th, at her home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. A native of Bulloch County and a 1959 graduate of SEBHS. She and Janice Nelson were known as "The Golddust Twins," basketball's best, coached by George Roebuck. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, puzzles and attending the many sporting events of her children. She was a member of Nevils United Methodist Church and Carol Crawford Sunday School Class. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, known as Mema.
Surviving is her husband of 56 years, Bobby Martin; a son, Tim Martin (Virginia); four daughters, Jill Gwinnett, Marcia Martin (Patty), Holly Weaver (David) and Tiffany Stansbury (Billy Joe); grandchildren, Deanna Keene (John), Jordan Martin (Kim), Andrew Gwinnett (Faith), Betsy Gwinnett, Ciera Weaver (Jason), Gage Weaver (Elisabeth), Lacie Clayton (Matthew), Logaan Clayton (Vanden), Lexxus Clayton, Hayden Grooms, Dallas Stansbury; and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Don Hughes (Janelle); sister, Dot Williams (Lawrence); several nieces and nephews, her special friend/care giver, Cindy Odom; and beloved dog, Chocolate.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 9, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be Thursday, April 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Nevils United Methodist Church with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Shannon Williams, Charlie Martin, David Martin, Kevin Deal, Ashley Harmon, Gary Martin, Demere NeSmith and Rob Morris.
