OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -– Lt. Col. Aubrey Newton (retired), age 89, died peacefully April 8, 2014, after a long illness. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Lee Newton.
He is survived by three children: his daughters, Janell Chester, Statesboro, Ga., Pat (Casey) Gilling, Overland Park, Kan., and his son, Lee (Mary) Newton, Peculiar, Mo.; five grandchildren, Michele Humphries, Statesboro, Ga., Jamie Griefer, Lawrence, Kan., Michael Newton, Raymore, Mo., Heather Antonides, Belton, Mo., and Audrey Newton, Lone Jack, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Jarret and Dylan Humphries, Statesboro, Ga., Scarlett and Lincoln Antonides, Belton, Mo., and Evie Newton, Raymore, Mo. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Hendrix, Statesboro, Ga.; and one brother-in-law, Bill Lee, Statesboro, Ga.
Aubrey was born in Statesboro, Ga. He married his wife, Mildred, and they spent their lives serving our country in the U.S. Army for 27 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He earned multiple awards, including The Bronze Star and The Meritorious Service Medal. They traveled and lived all over the world and enjoyed all that life had to offer them.
They retired to Overland Park, Kan., in 1973. His wife, children and grandchildren were his priority in life. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir wherever they were stationed, teaching Sunday school and working in his enormous vegetable garden. He belonged to the American Legion, the Masons, Shiners' and Jesters (Ararat Temple). He was a dedicated husband and father, the true patriarch of our family, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home, 502 Miller Street, Statesboro, GA 30458, on Friday, April 11, 2014, from 5–7 p.m.
The funeral service will be Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro, Ga.
There will be a Memorial Service held at Overland Park Christian Church, 7600 West 75th Street, Overland Park, KS 66204 on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 4 p.m., to be immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at the Gilling home, 9210 West 76th Street, Overland Park, KS 66204 until 8 p.m.
