BROOKLET, Ga. -- Mrs. Viola Mae Kicklighter Sikes, age 96, died Wednesday evening, May 14, 2014, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility in Statesboro. The Bulloch County native attended beauty school in Savannah as a young woman. She married J.W. Sikes and in 1946 they moved to Brooklet. Mrs. Sikes owned and operated a beauty salon at her Brooklet residence for 60 years.
Mrs. Sikes was a member of the Brooklet United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mollie Lee Sunday School Class and the Keturah Circle. She was also a member of "The Birthday Club" and looked forward to their regular fellowship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Sikes; her son, Joel Sikes; her parents, Thomas Watson Kicklighter and Lessie Latzak Kicklighter; and her brother, Levon "Bill" Kicklighter.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Penny Sikes of Brooklet; three grandchildren, Julie and Hywel Jones of Wales, United Kingdom, Greg and Jennifer Sikes of Brooklet and Carol K. Sikes of Dahlonega; two great-grandchildren, Maddie and Landon Sikes of Brooklet; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Roland Starling of Brooklet; and her nieces and nephews, Jerry and Pat Kicklighter of Walthourville, Bonnie and Don Youmans of Midway, Mickey and Ginny Starling of Brooklet, Ronald and Jannel Starling of Destin, Fla., and Gina Kay and Pete Wall of Sylvania. Additional survivors include her great-nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Brooklet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wes Moye officiating, assisted by the Rev. Pete Wall. Interment will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ken Starling, Jeff McPhail, Chad Wall, Todd Wall, Clint Sheppard and Hal Cromley.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mollie Lee Sunday School Class, Keturah Circle and Mrs. Dot Buie.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Brooklet United Methodist Church, 201 North Parker Avenue, Brooklet, Ga. 30415; or Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.
