Sharon Rothenbuhler, 77, died Wednesday, May 28, at Ogeechee Area Hospice surrounded by her loving family.
Sharon was a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and had lived in the Statesboro area since 1971 and had lived in Portal since 1991. In 1972, she was instrumental in starting the first multi-racial Girl Scouts Troop in Statesboro, and received the Gold Seal Scroll award for her efforts. She was named Outstanding Young Woman in 1972 and was also named in Who's Who. She retired from Heritage Inn after 20 years of service, where she was the activities director. She was an avid bowler and was included in the Bowling Awards Women's International Bowling Congress 1964–1981. She enjoyed tap dancing and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert F. and Margarite S. Runyan; husband, 2nd Lt. Lynn Harley Rothenbuhler, who died in 1963 in Vietnam, where he was a helicopter pilot.
Sharon is survived by: partner, Thomas Edenfield of Portal; two daughters, Michelle Hodges of Portal and Rene Rothenbuhler of Quincy, Fla.; brother, Dick Runyan, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; sister-in-law, Ellen Gast, and her husband, Kenneth, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; two grandchildren, Capt. Paul Lynn Rothenbuhler, and his wife, Kaye Neville Rothenbuhler, of Statesboro, and Jonathan David Hodges of East Dublin; two great-grandchildren, Luke Rothenbuhler and Claire Rothenbuhler, both of Statesboro; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 5–6 p.m. Monday, June 2, at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 2, in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with the Reverend Joan Kilian officiating.
