BROOKLET, Ga. - Mrs. Lila Lee Newton, age 82, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native of Bulloch County lived in Savannah as a child and graduated from Commercial High School. She married George Newton, and they moved to Brooklet in 1971. She retired from Georgia Southern University after 15 years in the financial office.
Lila loved bowling, and while living in Savannah, she joined the Savannah Women's Bowling League in 1965. Following her move to Brooklet, she joined the Statesboro Women's Bowling League in 1973.
She was a member of the Brooklet Primitive Baptist Church.
Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Esther Mae Lee, and a sister, Frankie Lee Rogers.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, George Newton of Brooklet; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynn and Larry Hall of Rincon, Ga., and Karen Tilton of Brooklet; a son, Michael Newton of Brooklet; five grandchildren, Larry Hall Jr., Kacie Tilton, Cory Tilton, Chelsea (Daniel) Newton-Williams and Christopher Newton; two great grandchildren, Brianna Hall and Connor Williams; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Melba Lee of Rincon, Ga., Wayman and Pat Ann Lee of Pt. Wentworth, Ga., and Wendell and Pauline Lee of Mississippi; a sister, Barbara Ann Lee Hooks of Savannah, Ga.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James Wayne and Norma Newton of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Wilson of Columbia, S.C.
Visitation will Thursday from 5–7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Brooklet Primitive Baptist Church with Elder W.H. Durrence officiating. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service.
Entombment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Larry Hall Jr., Cory Tilton, Christopher Newton, Thomas Lanier, John B. Lanier and Kelvin Lanier.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Brooklet Primitive Baptist Church, 111 West Lee St., Brooklet, Ga., 30415.
