STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Ana Maria "Mami" Rivera Mercado, age 77, received her angel wings on Monday, July 14, 2014, after a long illness. She was born in Florida, Puerto Rico, on July 26, 1936, to Ana and Jacinto Mercado. One of 12 children, she became a care giver at the very early age of 8, caring for younger siblings, and helping her parents with housekeeping and farm duties. Ana moved from Puerto Rico to New York City in 1975, where she became an active member of a Pentecostal Church, where she was involved in the music and prayer ministries of the church. She did not have a formal education, but was very much a "teacher" and example to her community and to everyone she met. Loved by all, she never went anywhere without her smile and always had a warm embrace and tender kiss to give to those who needed it. In 1997, she moved to Statesboro, where she continued to touch hundreds of people with her "angelic spirit" and became known as "Mami" by friends and her church family because she was the "church mother."
The Guest Book is expired.
She is survived by son, Norberto Mercado of Dunkirk, New York; daughter, Rosita "Rosie" Rivera of Statesboro, Georgia, and husband, Jaime Rivera; brother, Tomas Mercado; and sister, Felicita Hernandez, all of Puerto Rico. She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren, Tito, Natasha, Angie, Grendaliz, Stephanie and Joel of Dunkirk, N.Y.; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Viewing for Mrs. Rivera will be held on Friday, July 18th, from 5-8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro and a "Celebration of Life" Service will be held on Saturday, July 26th, at 2 p.m. at the United Pentecostal Church of Statesboro, Georgia, with the Rev. Randy Watts officiating.
