STATESBORO, Ga. - Fielding Dillard "Rusty" Russell III of Statesboro died on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, after an extended illness under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. He was born on April 7, 1963, a son of the late Fielding Dillard Russell Jr. and Elizabeth Radford Russell and a grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Fielding D. Russell Sr. and the late Mr. and Mrs. Franklin R. Radford of Eastman. He grew up on Edisto Island, S.C., graduating from Sea Island Academy, John's Island, S.C., in 1981. Mr. Russell was a 1986 graduate of Presbyterian College, Clinton, S.C., where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He attended graduate school at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, teaching ESL classes to international students there.
In 1988, Mr. Russell went to Japan with the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. He spent two years teaching English in elementary schools in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan. Later, he taught English at Aoyama Gakuin University, a Christian university in Shibuya, Tokyo. Mr. Russell was an avid fisherman and automobile aficionado. He and his wife, Hiromi, fostered dogs for the Bulloch County Humane Society. He was a member of the Edisto Island Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife, Hiromi Russell of the home; one daughter, Hana Elizabeth Russell of the home; and one son, Fielding Dillard Russell IV of the home. He is also survived by his mother, Elizabeth Radford Russell of Statesboro; two brothers, James (Molly) Russell of Boone, N.C., and William Russell of Statesboro; two sisters, Elizabeth Russell (Trip) DuBard of Florence, S.C., and Patience Russell (Scott) Gordon of Beaufort, S.C.; two nephews, Adam DuBard and Benjamin DuBard of Florence, S.C.; and three nieces, Mary DuBard of Florence, S.C., Ella Gordon of Beaufort, S.C., and Fiona Russell of Boone, N.C.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Statesboro First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kathi Parchem officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
The graveside service and burial will be in the Russell Family Cemetery in Winder, Ga., Sunday at 1 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Fielding D. Russell III Memorial Fund, 201 South Main Street, Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
