STATESBORO, Ga. - Sgt. Brock H. Chavers Sr., age 25, passed on Monday, July 6, 2009, in Khanabad, Afghanistan, from injuries he received while honorably serving his country. He was assigned to Americus' Company D, 2nd Battalion, 121 Infantry, of the Georgia National Guard. The Portal, Ga., native was a 2002 graduate of the Portal High School and a member of the Pine Grove Holiness Church. He enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in 2002. He was loved by many who knew him.
Sgt. Chavers' memories will be honored and cherished by a loving wife, Mrs. Minnie Chavers, Statesboro, Ga.; his son, Master Brock H. Chavers Jr., Statesboro, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Tamecia Reason, Statesboro, Ga.; his mother, Mrs. Loice Chavers, Portal, Ga.; his father, Mr. Jimmy Chavers, Statesboro, Ga.; three sisters, Veronica Chavers, Venus Chavers and Joyce Ann Williams, all of Portal, Ga.; four brothers, Sgt. 1st Class Courtney Jones, Honduras, Capt. Bryan Chavers and Staff Sgt. Victor Chavers, both serving in Afghanistan, and Pvt. 2nd Class Brandon Chavers, Ft. Benning, Ga.; mother-in-law, Sarah Walker, Statesboro, Ga.; father-in-law, Willie Walker Sr., Millen, Ga.; godmothers, Annie Luke, Millen, Ga., Annie Washington, Portal, Ga.; a godfather, Carl Givens, Metter, Ga.; godson, DeVonate Gordon, Statesboro, Ga.; a god brother, Chase Sherrifield, Portal, Ga.; a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Family visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Ben Samuel Hill Memorial Chapel of Hill's Mortuary, Inc.
A Service of Celebration and Honor for Sgt. Chavers will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church, 720 North Main Street, Statesboro, Ga., with the Rev. Ron Andrew, pastor; Elder Donald Chavers Jr., presiding, and Bishop Anthony Chavers, eulogist. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens, Highway 80 East.
