STATESBORO, Ga. -- Ms. Peggy Zane James Normand, age 78, died on Sunday, March, 10, 2013, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Lindsay, Oklahoma, native was a 1953 graduate of Lindsay High School. She moved to Oceanside, Calif., where she worked at Bank of America. She met and married William Barutio and moved to Atlanta and lived there for 21 years. Both were active in the Civil Rights Movement for African and Native Americans. The Barutio family moved to Savannah, where she was the co-owner and operator of John Wesley Hotel (now Planters Inn). She lived in Florida and married Marc Normand in 1981. She was an interior designer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Les and Lula James; her husband, Marc Normand; as well as a son, Zane Allen Barutio; and a sister, Demeris Jane Foley.
Surviving are a daughter, Michele Barutio Stephens of Statesboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Shawn Barutio of Loganville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Michael Barutio, Nicholas Barutio and Kara Stephens; a brother, Don Bob James of St. Croix/Midland, Texas; and a sister, Don Dru Riley of Pensacola, Fla.; several nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne McWhorter officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.
