Mr. L.C. Williams Jr., age 72, died Tuesday at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. The native of Jenkins County was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. He served with the Millen Police Department from 1962-1969. In 1969 he became a deputy sheriff with the Jenkins County Sheriff's Department and was elected sheriff of Jenkins County in 1972, serving for 12 consecutive years. Mr. Williams received the Georgia Sheriff's Association Outstanding Service Award 1975-1985. He also was awarded the Georgia Sheriff's Association Distinguished Humanitarian Award in 1983 and 1984. He served 19 years with the Bulloch County Sheriff's Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, L.C. Sr. and Hortense Parker Williams; and a brother, Robert Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Ruth B. Williams of Statesboro; one son and daughter-in-law, L.C. III and Lori Williams; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Teresa Williams, Patty and Steve Akin of Statesboro and Angie and Robert Newton of Sylvania; four sisters, Peggy Becton of North Augusta, S.C., Betty Crosby of Yorba Linda, Calif., Lorene Blackburn and Gloria Martin of Millen; six brothers, Roy Williams of Manalapan, N.J., W.T., Kenny, Terry and Charles Williams of Millen and Arnold Williams of North Augusta, S.C.; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday 5-8 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. John Waters and the Rev. Bill Brown officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Raymond Blackburn, Anthony Martin, Arnold Ray Akins, John Staten, Rudolph Becton, Wendell Turner, James Hotchkiss and Lynn Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers will be all law enforcement agencies.
Honor Guard will be the Bulloch County Sheriff's Department and the Statesboro Police Department.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church, Building Fund, 108 North Main Street, Statesboro, GA 30458.
