Arthur S. Metcalfe Sr.

Lt. Col. Arthur S. Metcalfe, Sr. (Ret.) Lt. Col. Arthur S. Metcalfe, Sr. (Ret.), nearly 93 years old, of Georgetown, passed away on July 21st in his home surrounded by his 7 children, multiple grand and great grandchildren and Gertie, his 13 year old boxer. He was born on Oct 14, 1920 in El Paso, Texas. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, Marie Josephine Soltner, his grandson Michael Pearsall and daughter-in-law Jessielou Metcalfe. He is survived by his 7 children: Judith Brackin and her husband Hal of Temple, Peggie Watson and her husband Johnny of Salado, Mary Ann Thorpe and her husband Gordon of Killeen, Kitty Pearsall and her husband Von of Georgetown, Arthur S Metcalfe, Jr. of Millington, TN, Adolph Metcalfe and his wife Lily of Round Rock, and James Metcalfe and his wife Susan of Houston. From his seven children he had 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Arthur graduated from Cathedral High School, El Paso, Texas in 1938 and from University of Texas at El Paso in 1969. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was commissioned in 1943. He transferred to the European Front serving in "F" Company, 14th Infantry Regiment, 71st Division, where he distinguished himself receiving a Purple Heart pinned by General Patton, two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star pinned by General Wyman. He was recalled in 1951 serving with the 424th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th United States Army, IX Corps in the Korean conflict receiving a third Bronze Star. After serving as the Operations and Training Officer, 2d Training Brigade, US Army Training Center (Air Defense) he retired in in 1967 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. In 2001, by the Order of the Secretary of the Army, he was assigned and granted the distinction of Distinguished Member of the 14th Infantry Regiment. After the military he taught History and Government at Eastwood High School in El Paso, Texas until he retired from teaching in 1983. Arthur was a Knight of Columbus with the San Gabriel Council 6453 and Msgr. Rabroker Assembly 2784 at St Helen Catholic Church and a lifelong member having held all offices in both the 3rd and 4th degrees. The family will receive guests for visitation from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown followed by a Rosary at 7:00 P.M. conducted by Monsignor Louis Wozniak. The Knights of Columbus will be present as the honor guard. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. at St Helen Catholic Church in Georgetown with Father Tim Holt as the celebrant. Interment Services will follow in Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. Lt. Col Metcalfe will be receiving full military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Francisco Cerda, Cory Howsden, Mark McCartney, Arthur S Metcalfe III, Jason Metcalfe, Robert Pearsall, Jose Rivera, and James Thorpe.
