MEIER, Billie W.
Billie W. Meier passed away February 14th, 2014. He was born May 8th, 1924 in Manor, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Oliver Meier, a sister, Virginia, and his wife, Frances Bryant Meier.
Bill is survived by six children from his marriage to Ilene Bishop Meier - Wayne, Cathy, J.B. and wife Marsha, Bruce and wife Dianna, Jud and wife Janet, Brandi Eldridge and husband David, and by three stepchildren from his marriage to Fran - Brenda McCoskey and husband Craig, Beverly Moore and husband Gary, and Jeff Bryant and wife Teresa. He is also survived by siblings Ralph Meier and wife Mickey, Joann Rees and husband Art, Emily Lind, Eleanor Hamrick and husband Jimmy, and Elaine McMahon, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, caregivers, etc...
Bill served with the 78th Infantry, Lightning Division, during World War II
in Germany where he helped secure the Schwammanaeul Dam at the Roer River and was one of the first foot soldiers across the Ludendorff Railroad Bridge at Remagen along the Rhine River. Both were vital to ending the war. Bill was wounded in action on March 16th, 1945. While recovering at Ft. Sam Houston, he received the Purple Heart
for wounds sustained in battle. He was honorably discharged on June 26th 1946.
Bill worked as a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service in Austin for 32 years. In his spare time he used his skills as a mechanic to help others with their automobiles and, as a gifted baritone, he sang for family and friends at church, weddings and funerals. Bill also volunteered at a residential facility for children born to HIV positive parents. Wherever he served, his dry wit and humor, beautiful voice and great smile were always welcome and will be sorely missed.
A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, March 21st, 2014, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas. A private interment will follow the service.
