E. Burton (Burt) Gerding
Burt Gerding, longtime resident and retired Lieutenant with the Austin Police Dept. passed away Tuesday, Mar. 19 after a brief illness. Born Feb. 22, 1927 in Greenville, TX, he lived in Dallas, TX, through his high school years. Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy
and was a proud WWII
veteran. He joined APD in 1950 and by the early 60's became a Lt., where he led the Criminal Investigation Div. during many notable Austin events such as the James Cross murders, the Whitman UT tower shooting, etc. In 1971, he joined the staff of Westinghouse Electric in Round Rock, to help them manage their new Gas Turbine facility. After they closed, he worked for the Pct. 2 Constable's office and the Travis County Coroner's office before retiring. His life of public service touched many lives and made many friends. He is survived by his former wife of 49 years, Mildred (Mimi) Gerding, son Gary B. Gerding, daughter Jeanne C. Whittington, six grandchildren and their spouses, and seven great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at All Faiths Funeral Services, North, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 30th.
