Irving William Howland Jr.

Irving William "Bill" Howland, Jr. Irving William "Bill" Howland, Jr., age 84, was called from this life on Thursday, September 12, 2013, after a hard- fought battle with cancer. Known to family and friends as Bill, he was born in Rochester, New York on February 3, 1929. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Irving William, Sr. and Doris Howland. Bill was a Navy veteran of the Korean War as well as a Mason. He attended the University of New York on Long Island, completing a degree in animal husbandry. Bill spent a long career working in knoto-biology; first with the Primary Genetic Center at the Leo Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and ending that career as a researcher for George Mitchell at TIMCO Breeding Laboratories Inc. in Houston, Texas. Over the years, he gave many lectures at different universities on germ-free life and surgical techniques and isolators. In 1980, he turned to his second passion and opened an art gallery on the Strand in Galveston, Texas. It was there that he met his loving wife, Lucille Edgarian, and the two soon settled in Austin to begin a Texas giftware business named Lucille Enterprises that they operated until retirement. Bill is survived by his wife, Lucille; his four children and their families: Irving William Howland III, Christina N. Stitt, Graham C. Howland and Wesley B. Howland; and his three step-children and their families: Linda and Earl Denham, Debbie and Cass Sansom, and Art and Peggy Edgarian. In addition, he leaves many loyal and loving friends in the Briarcliff community in Spicewood, TX. and throughout the country. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home located at 6300 W. William Cannon Drive in Austin, Texas.
