John G. Karabaic

Colonel (Retired) John G. Karabaic Colonel (Retired) John G Karabaic of Austin, Texas, born in New York City on September 14, 1920, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2013. John served his country in WWII as a bombardier in the Army Air Corps and was a POW in Germany from June 1944 until VE Day. After the war, he remained in the Air Force until his retirement after 30 years of honorable service. John was a problem solver and had many challenging jobs throughout his career for which he received commendations. Among these were a POW medal and the Legion of Merit Award. He was very devoted to his church, St. Peter the Apostle, where he enjoyed teaching adult bible classes and was active as an usher. John was preceded in death by his parents Matthew and Julia Karabaic and his brother Matthew Karabaic. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family, including his beloved wife of 66 years, Johanna Theresa; children, Joanne Hentz, John M Karabaic, Marianne Simpson, James Karabaic, Patricia Armstrong; sons-in-law Thomas Hentz, Tyler Simpson, Robert Armstrong; grandchildren Julia Karabaic, Kyle Simpson, Laurie Simpson Barnett, Jeffrey Hentz, Grant Armstrong, Andrew Armstrong; great-grand children Ethan Simpson, Miles and Tyler Simpson. Visitation will be held at Harrell's Funeral Home in Austin on Sunday evening, June 23, from 6 - 8 p.m., with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. On Monday, June 24, at 10 a.m., John's life will be celebrated at a funeral mass at St. Peter the Apostle in Austin. Following the mass, the family will proceed to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio for burial with military honors.
