Marian McKellar Harriss

Marian McKellar Harriss Aug 9, 1928-July 28, 2013 Marian McKellar Harriss, 84 died peacefully on July 28, 2013 in her apartment at Sunrise at Cinco Ranch in Katy, Texas. Ms. Harriss was born in Austin, Texas, growing up in a home at the end of the Sixth (Pecan) street trolley line at Deep Eddy Avenue. The Deep Eddy pool played an important part in her life, where she began her lifelong interest in swimming. She graduated in 1945 from Austin High School, serving as an officer in the Red Jackets. At The University of Texas, she studied Interior Design, participated in the University's club sports for women as a swimmer, and was named an outstanding student in 1949. She also met the love of her life, William B. "Ben" Harriss, and they were married November 6, 1954. Following her husband in his career with Alcoa, they lived in Port Lavaca, TX, Lafayette IN, Pittsburg PA, and returning to Port Lavaca. During that time, she practiced interior design, assisting her friends and neighbors as they turned their houses into homes. In Port Lavaca, she became involved with the American Red Cross, teaching swimming to numerous children and eventually serving as President of the local chapter. She also served in the local chapter of the Junior League, helping implement a program that brought plays and other entertainers to the local community, and serving as its President. After her husband's retirement in 1992, they relocated to Austin for their retirement. Following her husband's death in 2007, she moved to Katy Texas to be near her daughter. She is survived by her sons, William Matthew (June) Harriss of Austin, TX and Ty Christopher (Melodie) Harriss of Port Lavaca, TX, daughter, Patricia Harriss (Dwayne) Meloy of Katy, TX, grandsons Brett Harriss, Sage Maddux, Kevin Meloy and Kyle Meloy, granddaughters Fairleigh (Bowen) Rose, McKenzie Maddux, Tara (Jeff) Meija, Ashley Harriss, great-grandsons Isiah Meija, Jeff Meija, Jaiden Meija, Bowen Rose III, and great-granddaughters Lola Anderson and Colleen Rogers. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sunrise at Cinco Ranch for their efforts during Ms. Harriss' final days. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Friends of Deep Eddy Pool (1409 West Sixth, Austin, TX 78703), where Ben and Marion met, the (3429 Executive Center Blvd., Austin, TX 78731) or to the . A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 811 N. San Antonio Street, in Port Lavaca Texas on Saturday, August 3rd, at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
