She was the third of three children, having a brother, Douglas, and sister, Jean. She was blessed with a lovely soprano voice and used it well in church. She studied vocal performance and music education at Lamar Junior College and later at Sam Houston State Teachers College. While visiting prospective church members for Procter Street Baptist Church, she met David Battershell. They were married on June 16, 1951. David found a job opportunity in Houston in 1953 with Hudson Engineering, a company he would later lead as President. Their first child, Ben, was born in 1954; three years later, Brian was born. Dave's job required travel; Mary Ann got used to handling the boys and home without Dave's consultation. She instilled her love of music into her boys. In 1961, the family moved to Bunker Hill Village on Houston's west side where they joined Tallowood Baptist Church as charter members. Mary Ann anchored the home while volunteering at church and school. She visited new mothers and cared for newborns during Sunday School for many years. After retirement, Mary Ann and Dave moved to Georgetown, Texas. They enjoyed traveling to Scottsdale and England's West Country. She was blessed with 6 wonderful grandchildren. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Dave in 2002; and her brother Douglas of Port Arthur.
