WISE, Ruth Gracy
Ruth Gracy Wise, born in Austin on June 18, 1926, was the first child of Alice Tillar Duggan and David Caldwell Gracy. She died on April 13, 2014.
Ruth pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma at The University of Texas
where she met and married Earl Gronlund Wise. They moved to the Chicago Area and raised two daughters. She completed her degree at National Louis University (Illinois). Ruth worked for the American Cancer Society. In 1987, Ruth returned to Austin.
Her life was marked by her independent and inquiring spirit. She soloed as a pilot before she married. Ruth loved music and supported the Austin Symphony and the Austin Lyric Opera. She traveled extensively in Western Europe, Russia and Africa. Her daughter, Sally, joined her in exploring Canada and Central America. Ruth chose to skydive to celebrate her 75th birthday!
Ruth volunteered for her beloved KMFA and several art museums. She served on boards of directors including the Carl Jung Society (in Austin and Illinois), the Austin Friends of Folk Art and the Colonial Dames (Texas). She worked in Austin Community College's Student Affairs Office and other educational support programs (AISD).
Related to the Littlefield family through her maternal grandmother, she was a member of the Littlefield Society at the University of Texas. She joined her brother and sister in endowing a Presidential Scholarship at the University of Texas, School of Information, in honor of their parents. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the National Society of Magna Charta Dames and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Texas.
She is survived by: her daughters Sally Harral Wise and Lucinda Wise, her sister Lucile Gracy Harmon, her brother David B. Gracy II and his wife Laura, and many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. All of whom wish Ruth joy in this next adventure.
Ruth's family is grateful for the loving attention she received from the caregivers at Sarah's Place in Pflugerville, TX. They were a blessing and enriched her final years. Thank you also to the Compassionate Care Hospice, Wimberley, TX, for their care and support.
Service: May 24, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.
