HALM, Varris Fulcher "Jimmy"

Varris (Jimmy) Fulcher Halm, a long time resident of Henly, went home to be with the Lord on January 3, 2013. He was born April 23, 1921, in Henly, TX. His childhood years were spent in Austin and he graduated from Austin High School in 1939.

Following high school, his first job was with J.R. Duncanville in San Antonio as an aircraft radio technician. The year before he received his call letters as an amateur ham radio operator. That initial exposure to the world of electronic communication perked his interest. He subsequently landed a job working for the War Department as a Senior Airborne radio technician at Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma City and from there, the sky was the limit. In short order, patriotism, aviation and electronic communication became the consuming passion of his life and it served him well throughout his lifetime.

Jimmy served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a pilot in WWII. He completed boot camp in Wichita Falls, TX graduating with the 44-J graduation class of pilot training. Subsequently, his primary pilot training began in Pulman, Washington. He initially received his silver wings and was commissioned as a multi-engine rated pilot following instrument training in Pecos, Texas in 1945. He subsequently advanced to flying the Boeing B-17 at Drew Field in Tampa, Fl.. Other locations where he was stationed included Santa Anna, CA, King City, CA, Merced, CA, Las Vegas, NV and subsequently Randolph Field in San Antonio, TX.

Following his military discharge he embarked a long and distinguished career as a civilian with the FAA in Fort Worth, TX, as a electrical engineer. He proudly achieved the ranking of GS-13, the highest civilian ranking possible. Jimmy was called back into active service during the Korean Conflict.

Following his retirement, he and his wife, Helen, moved to Henly, the place of his birth, and resided on their ranch for the remainder of their lives.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Helen Halm, who went to be with the Lord on December 26, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his son, Allen.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Gary and Janie Halm, grandson, Greg Halm, granddaughter, Lindsey Halm, great granddaughter Karrisa Halm, great grandson, Hayden Halm, and great-great granddaughter, Payton.

Jimmy was a member of Henly Baptist Church and for the past year has resided as a resident at Hill Country Care Center in Dripping Springs.

A funeral services will be held at Monday, January 6, 2014 at 10:00 AM in Crofts-Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City. Visitation will be held Sunday January 5, 2014 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Crofts - Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City, Tx.
