William Leroy Berkman

William Leroy Berkman William Leroy Berkman, 96 a native of Georgetown, passed away in Sugar Land, TX on Friday, July 24, 2009. Leroy's family gather with friends for visitation on Monday, July 27, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH 35, Georgetown, Texas. A service celebrating Leroy's life will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, 311 East University Avenue, Georgetown. Interment will follow at IOOF Cemetery in Georgetown. Leroy was born March 6, 1913 in Georgetown to the late Oscar and Bertha Anderson Berkman. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Pauline Berkman and his sister, Pauline Hughey. He graduated from Southwestern University in 1935. After college Leroy coached football at Kyle High School. After serving in the army during WWII he returned to Georgetown. He took a position with the First National Bank. He remained with the bank and retired as a Vice President in 1981. He and Pauline were married on April 19, 1947. Leroy was a life long member of St. John's United Methodist Church. Leroy loved to fish and to explore, he loved to gather with family and friends and he loved to cultivate his garden and watch a good baseball game. Leroy leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving children, Larry Berkman and his wife Cynthia of Fredericksburg, Barbara Murphy and her husband Lonnie of Sugarland; cherished grandchildren, Lance Berkman and his wife Cara of Houston, Jennifer Row and her husband Patrick of Mason, Brooke Pennington and her husband Matt of Kentucky, Michael Murphy and Blaine Murphy of Sugarland; cherished great grandchildren, Hannah, Carly, Katie and Abby Berkman, Alex, Wyatt and Rader Row and Drew Pennington; along with many other loving family members and cherished friends.
