Homer and my Dad had known each other since the early 50s at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce. They were both brought to Texas by Alan Berger and worked at the Texas Research League together during the late fifties and sixties shaping the policies that allowed Texas become the economic powerhouse it is today.
However important that was, it is Homer’s love for his fellow human beings that I will always remember him for. When my Dad was sick and dying in 1984 it was Homer who would take time from his busy day to come and visit with my Dad. Homer would talk to my Father about their work together and what was going on down at the Capital. I could see my dad brighten up when Homer came over.
I love that folk song “You Can Tell We are Christians by our Love”. I know Homer was active in his Church but it was his love of his fellow man that really demonstrated his faith. It is his love for his fellow man that will be missed by those of us who saw him touch the lives of those around him.

Homer was a mentor and a gentle guide to anyone who sought his help. He was a wonderful soul who helped us all through the storms of legislative sessions. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

I have known Homer Scace for almost 45 years and always found him to be warm, charming and engaging, even as his memory failed him at the end of his life. He was helping Stephen with the annual rebuilding of the greenhouse to protect the plants for the winter. Homer knew I was someone he should know and played along gamely and in high spirits in spite of that terrible disease. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and my family sends its love to Betty, Stephen and Susan.
