Noble Doss Obituary

Noble Webster Doss, Senior After 88 years of life well lived, Noble Doss died Sunday evening, February 15th in Austin. Born May 22, 1920 in Temple, Texas, Noble was the son of Sterling and Mary Lou Doss. He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Curtis, Thomas Sterling, and Lavinia and his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Burwitz Doss. Noble attended Temple High School and graduated from the University of Texas where he was an accomplished member of the Texas Longhorns football team. He and Dorothy married in 1941 and, following his service with the United States Navy during World War II, returned to the football field to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles won the World Championship during the 1948- 1949 season while Noble was on the team. Noble and Dorothy returned to Austin where he continued his lifelong love of Longhorn football and nurtured many friendships in a successful life insurance business until his retirement in 2001. Noble was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1980 and, in 1995, into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Family members include his son, Noble Jr., and his daughter-in-law, Sharon Liston Doss. He was richly blessed with two granddaughters and their husbands, Jessica Doss Owens and her husband Matthew, of Arlington, Virginia and Amanda Doss Holt and her husband Greg of Houston. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Weed Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 North Lamar in Austin. As a professional caregiver to Mr. Doss in his later years, I shall always remember we two touring about in the golf cart and catching shouts and waves along the way. He was such an humble man that he seemed not to notice the constant shower of accolades sent upon him everywhere he went. May God bless his good family to keep his memory close.

My office was adjacent to Noble's several years ago, and I had the wonderful pleasure of sharing many relaxed visits with him. Malcolm Kutner, Noble's roommate at Texas, was a close friend of mine and we would spend hours "telling stories". He was a gracious and humble gentleman and I consider my time visiting with him very special and something I will never forget. May God bless and comfort the family.

Years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of serving Mr. Doss at a favorite neighborhood bar and grill. He was always such a joy and so kind. We all loved hearing his stories of UT and professional football and were saddened when he was no longer able to visit. My husband and I have often thought of Mr. Doss and wondered how he was. We are deeply saddened to hear of you loss, but know his was a life well lived. Mr. Doss was, is, and always will be a legend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. God bless.

I had the great pleasure of caring for Mr. Doss during a hospitalization several years ago. Despite the fact that I'm a Longhorn football fan, I was unaware of who he was. I was excited when I asked him about his football ring and he told me all about his history with the Longhorns and the NFL. He was very modest and humble, but that night on the internet I discovered how truly talented he was on the football field. However, what I remember the most about Mr. Doss is his kind and gentle spirit. He made an impression on me that will last a lifetime. Out of the thousands of patients I have cared for, he was one I'll remember forever.

What a true kind and gentle person! He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Noble was one of those rare persons that no one ever said an unkind word about. He was a real gentleman and indeed a friend.

My Uncle Bub use to talk about when he played football with Nobel and that team. He said that was the best team in history. Another great Longhorn is in heaven today. May God be with you.
