PRADOS, Betty McGuire|
85, for many years an educator in Puerto Rico and a proponent of teaching English as a Second Language, passed away at The Regency Village Care Center in Austin, Texas, on February16, 2014. Until her retirement in 1991 she was active in the movement to establish a professional association for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and became an officer, subsequently the president of, Puerto Rico TESOL. She taught English at the primary school level at the Academia del Sagrado Corazon, and collegiate English at the Universidad Metropolitana del Sistema Ana G. Mendez in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Born in Hammond, Indiana, and raised in Leavenworth, Kansas, she attended St. Mary College in Leavenworth. She raised her family both in New York, N.Y. and San Juan Puerto Rico. She attained her Bachelor's degree from the University of Puerto Rico and Master's degree from Inter-American University in San Juan. She did postgraduate work at New York University.
A resident of Miami, Florida, since the early 1990s, she was a volunteer at the Epiphany Catholic Church. She moved to Austin in 2008. She was an accomplished amateur artist and gourmet cook.
Her husband of thirty-eight years, Jose Prados-Herrero, passed away in 1985. She is survived by three children, Joseph Prados, of Austin, John Prados, of Silver Spring, Maryland, Mary Prados, of Miami Beach, Florida and her sister Mary Ann Moller, of Port Chester, New York.
She died peacefully and elegantly like she lived.
There will be a Funeral Mass for her at St. Austin's Church at 2026 Guadalupe St. on Friday March 7th at 2:00 PM. There will be a reception after the service at Joe Prados' home.
