Amanda Jones Obituary

Amanda Roberts Jones, the 110-year-old Bastrop daughter of a slave who lived long enough to vote for the country’s first African-American president, has died, her family confirmed this morning.

She celebrated her birthday on Tuesday, December 16. Baker said Jones went to sleep Thursday morning and didn’t wake up.

Her granddaughter, Brenda Baker, said that Jones had recently been hospitalized, but she was still preparing for a standing-room only birthday party on Sunday afternoon.

“She lived awful long,” Baker said. “It was a full life, and her faith in God helped her live a long life.”

The middle child of 13, Jones, who was African-American, was part of a family that has lived in Bastrop County for five generations. Her family remained a fixture in Cedar Creek and other parts of the county even when its members had to eat at segregated barbecue dives and walk through the back door while white customers walked through the front, said Amanda Jones’ 68-year-old daughter, Joyce Jones.

Amanda Jones’ life touched three centuries, during which she worked as a maid and a stay-at-home mother of 10 with deep religious faith as the cornerstone of her life, Baker said. Jones had voted actively for more than 70 years - even when it meant she had to pick cotton to save money to pay a poll tax.

Jones became a minor local celebrity after she mailed in her ballot for President-Elect Barack Obama in late October. Area elections officials said that she was likely the oldest registered active voter in Central Texas. When news of her vote spread, Jones was profiled on National Public Radio and ABC. More than 200 people signed an online petition to send her to Obama’s inauguration. Birthday cards from around the country began arriving at her home, Baker said.

I ditto my cousins comments with a twist.

(Cousin's Comments)

I was really looking forward to visiting with Aunt Mandy at her 110th Birthday Celebration but our Father had better plans and I`ll always cherish the wonderful memories that we shared. Family, you all just continue to hold on too God`s unchanging hands and be Blessed. I love you all.

(My Comments)

Original plans were to go to the celebration. Plans changed and we had to celebrate her home going. Family I am sorry I could not make it to either one but my heart was there. My Daddy. Who was born on the same day as Aunt Mandy was there in my absence to represent and that I count as one of my blessings. May God continue to bless us all with longevity as he did with Aunt Mandy. We are a strong people and my Aunt Mandy was strong in speaking on terms of endearment of God and for her family. I had the opportunity to be in her presence while being interview and that really touched my soul. To know that this great lady is a mortar in my eyes. Family you were and are still blessed to have the love and friendship of one great amazing lady. I love you all and hope to see you soon.

Respectfully,

I read about the passing of Mrs. Jones and was very moved by the obituary and the events surrounding her life. Our country has come a very long way and the changes that are taking place are long overdue. May God bless you all.

My Sweet Aunt Mandy and My Mad Granddaughter who did not at the time know the significance of taking a pic with such a humble and gentle soul. I will miss my Aunt and the wisdom she instilled in me. Love you Aunt Mandy.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your loved one. As you celebrate her life, I can not imagine how she viewed the transformation of so many things (great and small) that we now take for granted. In part, Ecclesiates 7:1 reads: "A name is better than good oil and the day of death than the day of one being born." At birth we do not know how a person will live. Your family has a wonderful legacy. Your loved one had a wonderful relationship with our Heavenly Father and led by example. I believe in the gift of God's love and that each prayer is answered. Your family will be in the thoughts and prayers of many. May God continue to bless you.

I didn't know Ms Jones, but what I've read of her, she was not a God Fearing woman as we so often read, but a God Loving woman.
May she rest in peace and may her family find peace in knowing that Ms Jones has provided inspiration to many people in this Great Country of ours.

The world is a better place because of the ordinary people like Amanda Jones who enrich it. Her story reminds me of George Dawson's book "Life is So Good". Texas has been blessed by having these two remarkable individuals living here.

Although I did not know her personally, when reading her obituary something told me to write a few words. It truly amazes me everytime I hear of someone who's lived a long life, to reach their 80s or 90s or even 100s. I know that it is truly a blessing & know that one had to have done something right in their life for God to have smiled upon them for so many years. May God Bless the Roberts Jones family & keep you.
