Antonio Garcia Obituary

Antonio Cantu Garcia Antonio Cantu Garcia, 80, of Austin, Texas passed away on Friday, December 15, 2006. He was born on June 23, 1926 to Albert and Frances Garcia in Gonzales, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Abel, Alfred, Albert, Anselmo, Miguel, Alvaro; sisters, Aurora Carrillo, and Amelia Rivera. Antonio served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and was a decorated war hero with two purple hearts, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal-WWII Button, Victory Medal, China Service Medal, Expeditionary Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Tony served in the First Marine Division and participated in the invasions of the islands Peleleiu and Okinawa where he received each of his Purple Hearts. He retired from the State Board of Insurance in June 1987. One of Tony's loves was softball. He played on several teams and later became an umpire where he has been an active member of the Austin Softball Umpires Association for the last 35 years. Antonio had other interests, serving as a founding father of the East Austin Lions Club, past president of South Austin Civitans and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Enedina Escobar; daughter, Becky Gill and husband Scott Gill (Sugar Land, Texas); sons, Mario Garcia and wife Jo (Liberty Hill, Texas) and Jaime Garcia and wife Theano (Sugar Land, Texas); grandchildren, Brittany Gill-Barbosa, Michael Gill, Alec Garcia, Alyna Garcia (all of Sugar Land, Texas); brothers, Adolph Garcia (Waukesha, Wisconsin), Armando Garcia (Waukesha, Wisconsin), Augustine Garcia (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006 at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at San Jose Catholic Church, 2435 Oak Crest, with Father Tom Frank officiating. My Heart goes out to the Garcia Family. I enjoyed working with Tony as an Umpire. He was very well known and respected. He leaves a lot of softball friends, people will always remember him. God Bless you and yours.
