Funeral services for Catherine Amoroso, 90, of Giddings are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Monday, December 23, 2013 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Sunday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Marie Catherine (Holtkamp) Amoroso was born on February 8, 1923 in Giddings, Texas to Charles and Wilhelmine (Umlang) Holtkamp. She was baptized on February 18, 1923 and confirmed on April 5, 1936 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. G.W. Fischer. Her confirmation verse was Psalm 145: 18-19, "The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them." She graduated from Giddings High School on May 22, 1940. After graduating from Blinn Junior College on May 15, 1942, she began working as a secretary at Camp Swift, Texas. It was here that she met her husband, Charles "Scooty" Amoroso. They were united in marriage on January 8, 1944 and would spend the next 54 years together until the death of Charles in 1998. Catherine was also employed as a payroll clerk at Fairmont Foods Company and as a secretary at Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Texas Department of Human Services in Giddings.
She was always active in her church and community where she had served as secretary of the Walther League, secretary of the Immanuel Ladies Aid and treasurer of the Lee County Senior Citizens. Catherine volunteered at Lee Memorial Hospital and Immanuel Lutheran School and played the piano for many years at the former Hennesey Nursing Home in Giddings.
Catherine passed away the morning of Thursday, December 19, 2013 after a brief stay at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings. She now joins her beloved Charles in Heaven, where they are together with Jesus forever.
She was preceded in death by parents, Charles & Wilhelmine "Minnie" Holtk five sisters, Sydonia Miller, Hermine Marburger, Charlynn Allen, Elizabeth Schatte and Lillian Schatte.
Catherine is survived by a loving family that includes two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis & Ernest "Sonny" Mitchell of Austin and Virginia & Kenneth Arldt of Giddings; grandchildren, Elizabeth Mitchell of Missouri, Stephen Mitchell of Austin, Scott Mitchell of Austin, Kristin Smith & her husband, Leslie of Giddings, Amy Moore & her husband, Scott of Dallas and Melissa Gill of Giddings; great grandchildren, Rhianna and Drisanna Sofikitis of Missouri, Chandler and Connor Mitchell of Austin, Madison and Sydney Smith of Giddings, Tanner and Cody Gill of Giddings and Annabeth and Whit Moore of Dallas.
Serving as pallbearers will be Elizabeth Mitchell, Stephen Mitchell, Scott Mitchell, Kristin Smith, Amy Moore and Melissa Gill.
