Cathy McElroy Obituary

Cathy Scott McElroy Cathy Scott McElroy, born September 29, 1952, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 22, 2010. A loving, caring, sister, mother and daughter, Cathy was deeply dedicated to wildlife. She served as a volunteer for 16 years with Wildlife Rescue. She spent countless hours rescuing and rehabilitating all manner of wildlife and abandoned pets. Cathy was a member of the Junior League of Austin for 29 years serving as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and other community organizations. Cathy also served as a Westlake Fire Commissioner for 10 years and as a Westlake City Council Member for 12 years. A mainstay in the Good Shepherd living Nativity Scene, Cathy always vied with family members for the coveted role of Mary. Cathy was proud of her participation as a Junior Helping Hand Debutante and Bachelor's Club of Austin Debutante. Originally a private first class in the Ft. Clark Expeditionary Forces, Cathy ultimately rose to the rank of 7 Star General Emeritus (self appointed of course). A classically trained player piano player and unschooled washboard player, Cathy's ultimate goal was to be part of the band. Cathy, so proud of her status as a native born Austinite, was predeceased by her loving father, Wally Scott Jr. She is survived by her beloved children, Cate and Andrew, her husband Mike McElroy, mother Cile Scott, aunts Peggy Whalley and Lillian Scott, brother Willy Scott and wife Janet, brother Wally Scott and wife Marietta. Nieces Colly Scott, Cile Scott, Ali Scott, Christy Scott and nephews Win Scott and Charlie Scott, devoted friend Chelly Gonzalez, and too many other friends and acquaintances to name. Cathy attended St. Andrews Episcopal School, O'Henry Junior High, 1970 graduate of Austin High where she was Self Proclaimed Ping Pong Champion, attended TCU and graduated from University of Texas. She worked for the law firm of Scott and Douglass, Austin Municipal Securities, Lone Star Beer Distributors as the first female beer sales representative, and was founder of Cathy's Eggs: Laid with Love. Long time Longhorn fan, Cathy wore her dad's 1941 Letterman's ring, and had a reserved seat in the Texas 200 Horns Club. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2010, at Weed- Corley- Fish North Lamar. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Laguna Gloria Museum of Art Amphitheater. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Wildlife Rescue, P.O. Box 806, Austin, Texas 78767. Obituary and guestbook available online at wcfish.com

I was a reporter at the Westlake Picayune from 1998 to 2005 and got to know Cathy well during that time. I worked with her on many stories, she was one of my strongest supporters and sources. I also had the privilege of visiting Cathy's home and meeting her family of animals, from deer to peacocks. She gifted me with some peacock feathers and feathers of other birds she found on the ground. I still have them. I treasure having known her.

The McElroys have always been wonderful neighbors. And we loved the eggs delivered to us whenever the chickens were laying a lot. Cathy even had special egg cartons created for her chickens: Cathy's Eggs -- Laid with Love. We will miss Cathy; we already do. Mike is a kind and gentle man who loves their children greatly. Cathy left a wonderful legacy with Cate and Andrew and we look forward to seeing them in years to come. Our condolences and love,

Kathleen, Austin, Annabelle, and Christiana Bay

Cathy was a breath of fresh air and always reminded me of my mother, carrying dogs and other interesting items around in purses, shopping bags or whatever else was readily available.

Oh, Cathy...how will we ever get our reunion plans complete? Michelle said it best yesterday: "When she crosses the Rainbow Bridge, she'll be overrun by all her wonderful rescue friends."
