Charles AIKEN Obituary

AIKEN, Dr. Charles H.

Dr. Charles H. Aiken DVM (Doc, Charlie, Dad) went to be with Jesus on February 11, 2014. Doc was a proud fourth generation Texan, a dedicated Aggie, and a Christian Cowboy to the end.

Doc was born in Salado, Texas, on February 27, 1925, to Carl H. Aiken and Annie Hamblen Aiken. After high school, he joined the Navy. He served his country as a medic stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

After the war, Doc attended Texas A&M and graduated from Veterinary School in 1951, the same year he married Anna Marie Bertram. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in June 2013. Son John Edward (Eddie) was born in 1952. The Aikens moved to Georgetown, where Doc started his solo veterinary practice. Four more children - Clara Joy, Mary Lou, Charles Fred, and Ernest Gray - followed.

Doc was the only practicing veterinarian in Georgetown between 1952 and 1969. He practiced for 44 years, serving ranchers, farmers, dairymen, and pet owners throughout Williamson County as well as parts of Bell, Burnet, Llano, and Travis counties.

Doc is survived by wife Anna, daughters Joy (Monte Mann) and Mary Lou Dupuis (Tim), and sons Fred (Conny) and Ernie (Julie Weldon). He was preceded in death by son Eddie; parents; brothers Jim, Bill, Carl (Bunny) and Gray; and sister Lou (Cissy) Durham.

Services will be held at St. John's Methodist Church, 311 East University Ave., Georgetown, at 2 pm on Friday, February 14, 2014. A bereavement luncheon will be served at the church prior to the service. A private burial will take place later in the afternoon at the Old Salado Cemetery. Doc will be buried next to Eddie and near his great grandfather, Herman Aiken, who settled in Central Texas in the 1830s.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John's United Methodist Church in Georgetown, to the Georgetown Public Library, or to one of the many wonderful Christian or animal charities.
