Admiration! I viewed him as a great role model. Laughter through hard times. I will miss cutting his hair...

I was a English student of Dan's at Austin College in the early 1970's. He was one of the most friendly and outgoing teachers I have ever had to this day. A poet extraordinaire, I still remember the readings of his poem "The Graduate," in Wynne Chapel as well as the readings of Ginsburg and Whitman both in class and at the campus poetry readings. I am shocked and saddened at his passing. Layne Hendrick, Austin College Class of '75 Austin, Texas

As my English professor in the 70's, Dan (he was among the first to encourage students to call him by his given name) was instrumental in broadening my horizons in not only what I read but loosening up my interpretive abilities. I have many fond memories of going outside under the trees for class discussions, and helping him mentor a group of freshman my senior year. He was also my introduction to the "hippie" life. When I ran into him years later in the original Whole Foods, it was reassuring to see that he was still the epitome of that sweet and gentle spirit. With gratitude for his time in my life, Susan McCarley Holman

Dan was deeply instrumental in my life, from the day I moved to Austin in 1979 in time for a New Texas party in his and Anya's back yard. He became an inspiration to my own work through years of deeply transformative therapy where his big love and huge heart cracked open my own. He was an amazing mentor to so many in his unconditional loving nature and I consider his friendship as a great treasure. May all his beloveds feel supported and consoled in their grief by knowing how well he lived his life and how loved he is.
In deep gratitude to you Dan,
Love,

Dan was an integral part of the big hippie machine that supported me in my dream to be a writer. Thanks, Dan.

Dan was an inspiration. He was unconditionally loving and caring man. He gave hugs that reassured your own faith in yourself. He had that wondrous gift of laughter with love. He touched my life and I am better man for having known him. He made a positive difference in the world.
Gratefully,
Tom Zimmermann

I'm deeply saddened by the news of Dan's passing. He was a friend when I really needed one. I'm grateful and privileged to have known him. To his family and many friends, I hope that the warmth of your memories will replace the grief we all feel today.
