It is hard to believe that five years have passed since Gertie's passing. I still think of the times we used to chat at Gallaudet when we got together for some plays at the Theater for the Deaf and I got to meet her young daughters. I was just a student and a stage helper at the time. We shared some humorous moments and she certainly could make us crack up. It was quite a small world that the girls would end up in my birthplace/hometown of Austin and work as my interpreters at IRS some years later. Blessings to her family, Shayne and the twins

Shayne,
This was the first that we had heard of Gertie passing away. You are in our thoughts, and prayers. Always let God be your guiding light in all things. I know that she will be surely missed. We did have good times in Maryland even tough that Texas is our home.
In Christ Always,

My heart sank when I learned of Gertie's passing. What a wonderful person she was.
She was the first deaf person I ever knew, my sign language teacher (this was when hearing people were taught simcom) in 1970. Everyone I know who took her classes remembers her fondly.
I was fortunate to know her through most of the years since she taught me, as a colleague and friend. Gertie was so much fun, one of the wittiest people I know. Her leadership is legendary but for me, it is also the memory of her warmth that lingers.
To all of her family and her many, many friends, I offer sincere condolences.
