After completing his BBA, James served in the US Army and was deployed to Germany. James became a certified public accountant, a distinction he held in high regard. He enjoyed a long career with UT Austin where he rose to the level of Director of Accounting, a position he held for 21 years.

James and his wife Sophie made their home in Austin and their union led to a son, Alan. James' first loves were his God and his family but hunting, baseball and ranching closely followed. He was a long time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Austin where he served in numerous capacities. Known to his grandchildren as "Opa", he loved watching their various sports activities.
