JAMES MEYERS Obituary

MEYERS, JAMES Rezia
James Rezia Meyers passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 88 on February 25th 2017 in Austin Texas.

James Meyers was born on August 6th 1928 in Abilene, Texas to Percy Avery and Katherine Jarvis Meyers. He graduated from Rice University where he was student body president and the University of Texas Law School where he achieved the Order of the Coif and was a member of the Chancellors. Following graduation from law school he joined the army as an officer in the Advocate General Corps based at Fort Hood. After a time in private practice, he became Judge of the 126th District Court in Travis County in 1966. As a retired District Judge, he was well known and respected as a mediator and arbitrator.
Judge Meyers was a founding lawyer for and board member of the Lola B Wright foundation from May 1980 until April 2012. He also served on the Rice University Board of Governors. Early in his career he was recognized as a Distinguished Young Attorney and later in his career he was recognized as a Distinguished Senior Attorney by the Austin Bar Association.

He loved sailing, opera, and spending time with his family but his true passion was the law. He will be remembered for his quick and impish wit, his legal intellect and rigor, his support of young attorneys (except when subjecting them to the 'Judge Meyers treatment' in court) and promoting access to the judicial system.

Judge Meyers was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest son Charles Jordan Meyers and his only sibling Charles Jarvis Meyers. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Auler Meyers and his first wife Barbara Jordan Meyers. Also his daughter, Anna Katherine Meyers and her children Jordan Shelby Smith and James Spencer Smith; his son, James Stephen Meyers; his daughter Martha Eddings Meyers and her children Caroline Anna Hamilton and Amie Katherine Hamilton; and his son Charlie's children, Carter Avery Meyers, Sterling Hardin Meyers, and Miller Jarvis Meyers. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Anne Greenwood Wooten; his stepson, Joseph Goodall Wooten and his children Sol Xuan Wooten and Savannah Jade Wooten; and his brothers' children, Katherine Meyers Garon and George Meyers.

He will be put to rest Saturday March 4th 2017 in a private graveside service after which there will be a public celebration of life at Tarry House, 3006 Bowman Ave., at 2pm. The family invites all who wish to come and share stories and commemorate his life.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (www.vlsoct.org) or The Judge James R. Meyers Scholarship c/o The University of Texas Law School Foundation, 727 East Dean Keeton, Austin, Texas 78705.

As stated in the Austin American-Statesman when Judge Meyers retired from the bench, he was "A lawyer's lawyer and a judge's judge."

Not sure what to say?

Dear Mary Ann, I am very sad to find out at this late date of Judge Meyers' passing. I hope you know my heart is with you and I will always cherish my time at Meyers, Lowery & Coates. I hope to visit Austin in the fall and would love to see you. Peace be with you, Lisa Kennedy

Mary Ann, so very sorry to hear about Jimmy. Jim and I loved his story telling and as soon as we found out about Judge Jimmy, Jim rang a bell for him; because like in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life", Zuzu says "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!".

Oh Jimmy I do regret being away and not knowing in a timely fashion you had left us behind. What a strong and good friend you were, and always will be for me, and I know Dudley echos my sentiments. Your blue and white sailboat that stole my parking spot at the lake, the insane and memorable trips to Aransas, the dignity and depth and respect you held the bench... these memories and more are skipping through my mind and memory. Memories and friendships that are more than 50 years old, but still fresh. Peace and grace, Jimmy, peace and grace.

Dear Mary Ann: I am so very sorry to hear the sad news of Jim's death. Although I only had the privilege of visiting with you and Jim at Angle Lake a few times and once at my home in Toronto, all those visits were delightful and most memorable. Through your's and Jim's interesting and entertaining stories, we learned a lot about life in Texas and appreciated your interest in and love for our Canadian cottage life. And I thank you both for adding so much love and joy to the lives of my daughter, Lisa, and her children, Matthew, Sarah and Andrew.

I have fond memories of the Meyers family who lived across the street from my childhood home.
Often when I'd be out and about playing, Judge Meyers always took time to say hello
and be genuinely interested in me. I will always remember his light heart and kind smile.
He was a shinning star in our neighborhood, through his warmth and dedication to all things
good. Love to the family and all who were blessed to know him.

I was so sorry to learn of Jim's passing . My folks bought their home across from Hancock Golf course from Jim and Barbara when I was 10. The Meyers moved around the corner and down the block. Jim wrote the recommendation letter that helped my brother Andrew go to Rice! My Condolences and Prayers to Anna K, Stephen, Martha, Barbara, and everyone who cared for Judge Jim and all the Meyers. Blessings, Marian Tullis Blake

Dear Judge Meyers, you were always an inspiration and a true friend. The smartest judge I ever worked with and the greatest mentor one could have. My sincere condolences to your family. They should know you were loved and admired.

Dear Jimmy....so sad we have lost you. We all loved you dearly and will miss our time together at Angle Lake. We will have a glass of red wine this weekend and toast it to you and all of your stories, laughter, and the memories of food, wine, and the love of those little chipmunks that continued to visit your deck not to mention sailing in the "skunk" and nibblies out on the water in the pontoon boat... Thank you for your wisdom from that lovely old leather recliner looking out over the lake...we love you and wish you peace now. Lisa Fearnley-Brown and Gus Manning

In the words of an Unknown Author, Friends are the pillars on your porch. Sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you, and sometimes it's just enough to know that they are standing by. You were there for our family 21 years ago and we have not forgotten how you were our pillars on our porch and now it is our turn. You are in our thoughts and prayers. What a joy Jimmy was. If you needed a good laugh, an excellent piece of advice, a well thought out opinion, or merely an attentive ear, you could count on Jimmy to provide it. My love and condolences to Mary Ann and all of Jimmy's family.

Almost 49 years ago, Judge Meyers presided over my wedding. He told us that we were the first couple that had asked him to do this, and we were impressed by his kindness and enthusiasm. It was a small wedding, and Judge Meyers really added a lot of class to it. And the marriage has lasted! Thank you, Judge Meyers.

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the services for Judge Meyers this weekend. He was a friend, mentor, and exceptional boss. He taught me much, both inside the courtroom and outside the courtroom. Quite simply, he was a marvelous person. I like to say that he taught me how to write. I am convinced that was a very painful process for him. I wish that I could be at the services, but please know that I will be there in spirit. My condolences to Mary Ann and the family in their sadness and in the journey that lies ahead of them without the judge. Marty Terry

Anna K and Family, my heart goes out to you all. I will always remember your Dad's great wit and sense of humor. It was an honor to serve on the Lola Wright Board with him, following my parents. I had heard many of their funny stories and was able to experience the Judges wit and candor. My Mom highly respected and admired him, as I did. He will be missed but I am sure his influence on many people will be carried on. I will always fondly remember him in the highest regard and respect. Your old friend, Shelley Todd
