Leonard Reed Obituary

Relatives, friends and police officers across Central Texas on Thursday mourned the death of Leonard Allen Reed, a Cedar Park police officer who was described as "the guy everybody liked."

News of Reed's death sent shock waves through Reed's tight-knit family and the 80-member Cedar Park police force. Flags were lowered to half-staff throughout the region Thursday, and area police officers began wearing a black cloth over their badges that will remain in place until Reed is buried.

"The Cedar Park Police Department is really mourning the loss of one of our finest officers," Police Chief Henry Fluck said. "The department is in a state of shock right now. We are going through a very difficult time."

"We have a great hole in our family," said Cpl. John Hawkins , president of the Cedar Park Police Association and a detective with the department. "Leonard was the guy you never wanted to see anything happen to. Leonard was the guy everybody liked, period, end of statement."

Reed, 41 , was riding on his department motorcycle on Arrow Point Drive near RM 1431 when he crashed Wednesday afternoon, officials have said. He died Wednesday night at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.

Hawkins said representatives of the police associations for Austin and Cedar Park would be working on funeral arrangements with Reed's family, which includes his wife, Cynthia, and two sons, who are 11 and 13. As is tradition, Hawkins said, officers have been posted to stand by Reed's body until he is buried.

A Navy veteran who had been with the department for four years, Reed was described as a popular officer among his colleagues and the public he protected. He was voted by his peers as the department's officer of the year in 2008, Fluck said.

"He loved being a police officer," Fluck said. "He was highly respected in our Police Department. He was a leader. He was admired."

Reed grew up in the St. John area of Northeast Austin until his family moved to East Austin, said longtime family friend Nelson Linder , who is head of the Austin chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Linder described Reed as a gregarious man who overcame challenges and gave back to his community, mentoring young children along the way.
While many of the children Reed grew up with went into a life of drugs and crime, Reed turned everything around and became a role model, Linder said.

"This is a major loss for Austin," said Linder, who met Reed 20 years ago. "He is a role model for how young people can turn their lives around. He came out of a very tough environment, and he was very focused; he had a really big vision and a big heart."
Cynthia Reed and another relative of Reed's declined to comment by phone Thursday.

Reed is expected to be honored by the City of Cedar Park and the Police Department at William T. Laws Jr. Park , which is named for the only other Cedar Park police officer to die in the line of duty, Hawkins said. Laws died Dec. 20, 1979, when he was struck by a vehicle while assisting at the scene of a wreck .

Reed was in the early training phase of becoming a motorcycle patrol officer with the Police Department's motor division, Hawkins said. He had just completed a traffic stop with a training officer when he lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle, he said.

The department has asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to investigate the crash, DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said.

In about two weeks, Reed was scheduled to go to a weeklong state motorcycle certification course, Hawkins said.

Previously, Reed worked in the schools division for the department and was a school resource officer at Vista Ridge High School for the 2007-08 school year, a Leander school district spokesman said.

Reed wanted to try something different, Hawkins said, and was working to become a patrol officer and make traffic stops.

leonard is my 1st cousin, and when we used to be around one another, he was always so loving, caring, playful, and a comedian or jokester. I never witnessed him mean towards anyone, treated everyone the way they should be treated, and the way he wanted to be treated. He loved everyone, and always smiled, and the smile was a genuine smile. At the funeral it was not a shoke of all the genuine words, and thoughts from everyone, as he was like this all the time. It was so wonderful to see all the respect from all the officers from all over, giving their honor to a wonderful police, cousin, friend, and wonderful husband to Cynthia and his 2 sons/Domenic and Demitri. Leonard is and was an amazing angel. He truly served his purpose on earth, and God felt that his job was well done, and loved him more. Not many people you can truly say are so loving, caring, positive with a smile all the time, well Leonard kept a smile on his face, and was such a positive person, and role model to others. There was a time frame that Leonard and I had not seen or talked to one another, and I moved out of State, but when we did, there was always the chemistry of the old time when we were around another, and the time we saw each other with that tight embrace of a hug. I want to say everyone should look around, and we are not living the way and giving the way Leonard did, we need to look at making changes for the best. None of us know when God plans to call for us. God bless Cynthia, his wonderful wife, and prayer also to Domenic & Demitri. I love you cousin, and you will always be remembered, never forgotten. And missed. Leonard loved the Lord, lived by the word.

My condolences to the Reed family for your loss and my prayers are with you all in these trying and sad times. I went to high school with Leonard and I am a Detective with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and Leonard helped me with a few Investigations at Vista Ridge when he was the SRO there. He had a way of working with the students. I attended the funeral today and was very moved by the outpouring of the community and fellow law enforcement officers.

May God bless you and keep you and may his face shine upon you in this time of need.

My office window (off Arrow Point Dr.) allows me to see the constant (still about every 30 minutes) ways people are praising Officer Reed's life. I have talked to some who have stopped by, and Officer Reed is a testimony of how God can use one life to change so many. I wish I had known such an extraordinary man.

I also wanted to tell you that I left the office @ 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 18. As I was getting into my car, I looked up at the clouds. There in the sky was a brilliant rainbow that started at the scene of the accident and went across the sky.

"Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind." Genesis 16:14-15a

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

I'm still shocked after hearing about Leonard's passing. He was the type of guy who brought the fullness of life and genuine kindness to everyone around him. I can't believe he's gone. The Lord must have some work for him in heaven. May He bless you now Leonard and wrap His Grace around your family. Rest in the fact that you will all be reunited again.

I worked with Officer Reed at VRHS and I cannot tell you what a great impact he made on those kids. He understood them, taught them, and helped them. My last encounter with Officer Reed was last spring as he and his partner brought a student into my class. This boy had been in trouble in the past when Officer Reed was on our campus, and he wanted him to get back to school safely. The boy was walking home because he forgot his homework...Officer Reed picked him up and delivered him to class. We visited in the hall and he was off...Goodbye my friend. Rest in Peace
