Mary Rostrom Teacher, coach, and friend, Mary Rostrom, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013. She was born February 1, 1934, in Houston, TX, to Joseph (Joe) C. and Marie (Seydler) Rostrom. A 1952 graduate of Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in Houston, and a January, 1957 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree, Mary was a life-long learner who encouraged others to be life-long learners as well. A Longhorn with no rival, Mary was a life member of the Texas Exes. Mary began her working life with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, later moving on to the Texas State School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Her teaching career began in Taylor I.S.D., and over a career that encompassed more than three decades, she touched student lives in Del Valle I.S.D. and Round Rock I.S.D. through teaching science and P.E. and coaching volleyball, basketball, and golf. She taught students from elementary through high school. Mary retired from Canyon Vista Middle School in Round Rock I.S.D. at the end of the 1990-91 school year. Preceded in death by parents, Joe and Marie Rostrom; and brother, William (Bill) C. Rostrom, Mary is survived by her life partner of 39 years, Donna L. Holman; niece, Peggye Rostrom Walleck and her husband Nathan (Nick) Walleck; and more loving friends and neighbors than one can count. A Memorial Service for Mary is planned for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at the Metropolitan Community Church at Freedom Oaks, 8601 South 1st Street, Austin, TX, 78748.
