Nancy Belle MATTHEWS

Obituary Condolences

MATTHEWS, Nancy Belle

Nancy Belle Matthews, age 91, went home to heaven on December 23, 2013. She was born Nancibel Keating in Austin, Texas on September 3, 1922 to Charles and Nancy Standifer Keating.

Nancy was born and raised in a tiny house on Trinity St. in downtown Austin. Frequent were the stories about roller skating on Capitol grounds, building forts under the house, swimming daily in the pristine waters of Barton Springs, and even taking her Father's Model T out for a spin around town without his knowledge or permission.

Nancy graduated from Austin High School in 1939 and then attended the University of Texas for two years. She worked at the State Health Department and then the State Capitol where she listened to a young Cactus Pryor, her coworker, belt out popular tunes of the era each day.

During WWII, she worked at the beautiful old Windmill above Barton Springs Pool selling popcorn and snow cones to young soldiers as part of many business ventures with her husband.

Nancy settled in Sunset Valley in 1952. She became a Mother to two adoring daughters while working alongside her husband in the family business. She will be fondly remembered for her excellent home cooking, pie making, beautiful birthday cakes, considerable talent as a dressmaker, her constant chauffeuring of the girls, her broad sense of humor and dry wit, her generous spirit, her beautiful smile, and her love of animals, especially stray cats in need of a loving home.

Nancy, simply put, was a beautiful person both inside and out to all who were fortunate enough to have known her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charles and Billy Joe Keating.

She is survived by her daughters, Kay Matthews, Lu Ann Matthews and her husband, Rick Hext; granddaughter, Rachel Reynolds and Jason Lawder, great-grandson, Jaxon Lawder; good friend Chuck Young; her extended family, Regina Hendrik and Gerrit Buschhorn of Velpke, Germany; numerous nieces and nephews; and, of course, her very special black cat, Tommy.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Austin Memorial Park with Reverend Gordon Bergstrom officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to www.Austinhumanesociety.org to honor Nancy's love of animals.
